Spondylolisthesis and its Implications

The name is a terror in terms of spelling exercises but spondylolisthesis will be something that people in the medical world know about. Essentially it involves some problems with the structure of the final column. The end result is chronic back pain. This is not to say that people do not go through life with misaligned discs and yet feel no symptoms. In fact it has been said that the majority of such cases do not end up in hospital. It is the few that are capable of causing such devastating pain, which are put forward in the medical journals. The actual physical state that causes spondylolisthesis happens when the discs shift slightly. However the underlying conditions are usually due to some form of major trauma. For example there might be a freak accident in sport.

Posture and Spondylolisthesis

Given the fact that it is well known that the underlying cause is due to changes in the discs of the spinal column, the practice of poor posture is an obvious culprit. Posture is not just about looking good for visitors and other people around the individual. It has some implications for the way that the bone structure is maintained.

Bad posture of spondylolisthesis

It is almost certain that bad posture can contribute to the presence of spondylolisthesis in a significant section of the population. At the same time the type of furniture that people use might not be conducive for having a good posture. Some of the furniture is just too short or too tall and the person has to bend behind to get to their work station. All these factors can lead to a bout of spondylolisthesis.

Young People and Spondylolisthesis

It is important that young people are aware that the condition can affect anyone at any age. The stereotype is that older people are the ones who are troubled by back problems but the reality is that even young people can suffer from spondylolisthesis. This is especially true if they have a family history of the condition or have not treated their bodies well. Those who are involved in very active sports may experience an increase in risk for this condition. Being aware of the possibility of suffering from spondylolisthesis can make young people cautious and careful in the ways that they use their bodies. If they have taken good care of their bodies, they have a very good chance of avoiding the condition in their old age.

The Prognosis for Spondylolisthesis

The problem with spinal pain is that once it starts, the end journey is never in sight. People will continue to feel a certain level of discomfort for the rest of their lives even with the right amount of treatment. However the presence of spondylolisthesis does not mean that the patient cannot continue to have an active life. For example some of the treatments that are suggested involved a certain level of physical activity. The presence of pain killers has made the management of spondylolisthesis easier.
