Information on Herniated Disc

The herniated disc is associated with excruciating back pain. Sporting accidents have been blamed for the condition as well as other debilitating injuries. The ideal is for the people to take care of their bodies and avoid serious injuries to their spinal column. Most people tend to refer to the condition as a slipped disk. The symptoms include leg pain and some weakness in the muscles within the leg. A sudden injury or a repeated course of abuse might cause the condition to arise. The condition is also associated with the narrowing of the spinal code. This leads to some unpleasant irritation. Of course it is imperative the appropriate medical attention is sought as a matter of urgency. The longer the herniated disc goes unabated, the more likely it is to cause long term damage.

The herniated disc at work

There is some concern by employees that they will be held liable when there is an incident of a herniated disc. This fear is perfectly rational and is routed in the understanding of how the compensation culture works. Given the fact that the condition is caused by wear and tear, it is likely that the employee will want to be compensated. The legal position is very clear that if someone is doing work and then they get injured, they will be entitled to some sort of compensation unless they have deliberately ignored the safety rules in the work place.

How sports people related with herniated disc

As for sports people, the herniated disc is effectively an announcement of retirement. It is very difficult to go back to competitive sports with the pain that that condition induces in the patient. Thankfully the incidence is not a regular occurrence otherwise there would be few sports people left.

Techniques for avoiding the herniated disc

Pushing the body way beyond acceptable limits will certainly increase the risk of getting the condition. Exercise and vigorous physical activity should be accompanied by rest and recuperation. The body has an optimum level of functionality and it is very dangerous to push it beyond that point in the hope of achieving glory. The pain that comes from herniated disc is so acute that one has to take care to ensure that it does not stop them from doing their profession. If there is some procedure for lifting heavy things, it is best to follow that procedure. Health and safety is not just the preserve of the employer but the employees have to actively ensure that they are not putting their lives and health at risk.

Treatment for the herniated disc

Initially one would be looking to deal with the issues of pain. This can be achieved through the administration of pain killers that are able to cut through the condition. Once this is complete and the patient is more comfortable, thought has to be given to a long term strategy for protecting the body. For example it might be decided that the best option is surgery or to take some physical therapy.
