Symptoms and Treatment of Foraminal Stenosis

The condition of foraminal stenosis is a subset of the various types of stenosis that are found within the entirety of humanity. The condition roughly translates into a situation whereby an opening is narrowed. In real terms this means that the nerve columns are narrowed which causes the complications. Sometimes this condition is a result of congenital factors and therefore the parents will play a role. On the other had some patients have a predisposition to foraminal stenosis which seems to suggest that genes are the overriding factor. Further still there is an argument that the condition is one of the signs and symptoms of an ageing body. The statistics tend to bear this out because many of the sufferers form foraminal stenosis is nearing pensionable age.

The symptoms of foraminal stenosis

Patients normally report an increase in the numbness of the area affected. If the patient is elderly or has some other condition, this can be attributed to the role of other factors rather than pointing towards the fundamental cause. The other symptom of general weakness can also mean a number of things quite apart from the foraminal stenosis syndrome. The symptoms of foraminal stenosis will normally progress into a burning sensation that does not seem to stop. There will also be some tingling and a feeling of pins within the extremities. The leg is the area which will be most affected. Given the generality of symptoms, it would be very easy to misdiagnose the foraminal stenosis. Therefore the role of the physician can never be neglected in treating this condition.

Areas affected by foraminal stenosis

The condition normally targets the entirety of the spinal column. However in terms of pure concentration, the area of choice is the lumbar section. As the patient of foraminal stenosis attempts to walk, they will feel a sharp pain in the lower extremities or the buttock area and calves. Where the foraminal stenosis is of the cervical kind, it will affect the upper extremities running from the neck to the end of the spinal column.

Treatment of foraminal stenosis

The severity of the condition will determine how far the pain will travel. The longer the patient takes to access treatment of foraminal stenosis the more the pain will spread. Diagnosis of foraminal stenosis is not always easy and therefore the doctor might have to undertake either an MRI scan or a CT scan to ensure that they can see what is happening to the body.

Dealing with foraminal stenosis

The first thing that the patient has to do is document that symptoms and progression of the condition so that they can tell the physician everything that has been happening to them. Efforts must be made to access proper medical attention at the earliest opportunity. The presence of foraminal stenosis is not something that can easily be ignored in the hope that it will simply go away. The patient has to take the symptoms of foraminal stenosis seriously and ensure that they are clear with their doctor before undergoing any sort of medical treatment. Once given the treatment, they have to ensure that they follow it diligently.
