Meet the Facet Joint Disease

The facet joints are very important for the spine because they connect the vertebras one to another. They have the same characteristics like any other joints. They have cartilage and a surrounding capsule. Their role is very important because they provide our spine with stability in movement, motility and good support. The facet joint disease occurs whenever there is a degeneration of the facet joints. The main symptoms of the facet joint disease are: inflammation, lower back pain and most common muscle spasms. They may seem bearable at first, but after a while the pain will simple be too much to handle, so treatment is required and advised as soon as possible.

Facet joint disease causes

Facet joint disease is the most responsible for the pain in the lower back and it starts in the joint area. The joints are keeping the vertebras connected and allow the spinal column to be flexible and to move according to your needs. Facet joint disease occurs when there is a breakdown or degeneration of these joints. But besides spinal accidents that may lead to this disease, there are some genetic causes that can lead to facet joint disease: weakened immune system, age, obesity, bad rest positions and last but not least general wear and tear.

Types of facet joint disease

Everybody knows that the spinal column is responsible for movement but in fact the spinal column is responsible for much more. The spinal column has three main parts: the cervical or the neck, thoracic part or the middle back and lumbar part. Any degeneration of these three parts may lead to facet joint disease. The facet joints, like any other type of joints, can be damaged by arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (joint swelling caused by the body’s immune system attacking synovial membranes). These in fact are known as various types of facet joint disease.

They may or may not include medication. The main thing you should do when facing facet joint disease is to correct your standing position.
