FBSS and its Implications

The failed back surgery syndrome is often referred to as FBSS for short and is one of the more painful conditions that can affect people. Although the back surgery is aimed at reducing the amount of pain that the patient is suffering, there is a possibility that there might be complications at the end of the process. For some people the automatic response is to blame the doctor for some level of incompetence. This is a very unfair accusation because FBSS can arise even with the most meticulous of doctors. It is just something that one has to factor into the recovery process. The surgeon may be able to take some precautions to reduce the possibilities of occurrence of FBSS but ultimately it is a lottery.

A Reputation for FBSS

The name tends to suggest that there has been some sort of failing in managing the process. This is not strictly true and it is also important to note that the recovery is never guaranteed from FBSS. On average it has been estimated that FBSS occurs in between five percent and fifty percent of cases. This information is based on a specific study group that was completed in 2005 within the European Union. The Czech study is speculative in as much as one cannot predict with accuracy the outcome of the operations. It must be also noted that the conclusion said that the rise in cases was due to the increase in the number of surgery operations. This study established a direct link between the number of operations and the incidence of the condition.

Factors affecting the incidence of FBSS

Where scar tissue is found around the place of surgery, it may affect neurological functions which can ultimately lead to FBSS. If the surgeon was not very competent in the work that they did, it can lead to the creation of iatrogenic injuries which increase the incidence of the condition. Moreover if the place of surgery is misdirected from the real cause of pain, the risks of FBSS will increase. Where the patient has not been properly tested for fitness before surgery, the incidence of FBSS will be increased.

Surgery and FBSS

It is imperative that any surgery is necessary and appropriate. If people go for this extreme form of treatment with every ailment, they increased the possibilities of injuries and bad conditions. When a firm decision is taken to go for surgery, it will be important to get someone who is competent and is able to do the work properly.

Progressing through the treatment of FBSS

Most clinicians will advise that it is better to take a gradual approach to the treatment of the condition. Managing the pain of FBSS will obviously be a high priority but then one has to move on to ensuring that the injury does not develop into something more serious. A change in lifestyle can have a great impact if it is geared towards reducing the strain on the body. There are specific medications that sufferers of FBSS take throughout the duration of the condition.
