Causes of Bone Spurs In Neck

Aging is the biggest cause of bone spurs in neck. The cartilage protecting the bones at the joints wears out. Discs present in between spinal bones acting as cushion for the bones breaks down. In order to compensate, the body creates extra bone to bring equilibrium and stability to the bone joint. Certain health conditions namely, herniated disc, spondylosis, diffused idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and osteoarthritis may cause bone spurs in neck. This is a condition that you do not want to be suffering from at all because it is irritating. It is also not good to ignore it for long.

Symptoms of Bone Spurs In Neck

With increase in the size of bone spurs in neck, other adjacent bones, ligament and tendons get compressed and there is dull neck and shoulder pain. This pain aggravates with activities and subsides on taking bed rest. Repeated rubbing brings swelling and tenderness in the neck and shoulder, weakening the muscles and initiating muscle spasm. It also affects the nerves and symptoms such as numbness and tingling in the hands with loss of coordination in part of the body. On worsening of the condition, lack of control over bowels and bladder might occur.

Medical Treatment for Bone Spurs In Neck

Presence of bone spurs in neck is diagnosed through x-ray, CT scan or MRI scans. The pain is brought down by administering anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs. Some muscle relaxant is also prescribed. Application of ice pack on the neck is also helpful in subsiding pain in the affected area. If the above treatment does not give desired response then corticosteroid injections may be resorted to. Physiotherapy is also advised in conjunction which helps to give strength to muscles. Some corrections in routine activities coupled with water aerobic exercises have been found to be quite beneficial in treating bone spurs in neck.

Surgical Treatment for Bone Spurs In Neck

Bone spurs in neck can also be removed from the affected area by surgical methods. Our of several types of surgical procedures, the one is chosen keeping in view the location of bone spurs in neck and the health aspect of the suffering patient. There is open surgical procedure and arthroscopic surgical technique is mostly performed. In the latter, several tiny incisions are made and a narrow tube called anthroscope is inserted into the area. The anthroscope helps the surgeon in using small tools and watch the procedure through an integrated camera. You see, this is a very sensitive surgery.
