Causes of ankle bone spurs

The ultimate cause of ankle bone spur is osteoarthritis. Ending points of the bones are covered by cartilage. This cartilage is endangered in case of this osteoarthritis. Its smooth surface becomes rough. At last, it is damaged and produces pain. Our body tries to recover. The road to recovery process becomes harmful often. After that, a new bone grows up along with an existing bone. Another cause of this disease is calcification of tendons and ligaments around ankle joint.

Signs and symptoms of ankle bone spurs

There are some common symptoms of ankle bone spurs which include pain sensation in the affected area and mounting its severity after work load or severe pressure. The pain will referred in the lower extremities at the related spinal nerve roots. Another symptom is inflammation. There is also finding of ankle numbness, muscle spasm, weakness, cramping etc in a patient with ankle bone spurs.

Diagnoses of ankle bone spurs

X-ray is the first and foremost test for diagnoses of ankle bone spurs. Patients having pain in ankle region are asked to do a plain X-ray of ankle joint. Because of increased calcium deposition in bone spur, radio opaque area of ankle joint will be more dense than normal. Normally plane X-ray can identify the disease. If not, then further investigation is asked to do. Such as: MRI, CAT scan etc. These are normal procedure of diagnoses of ankle bone spurs. Trauma to ankle joint can cause damage. In this condition sometimes body recovery system produces ankle bone spur.

Treatments of ankle bone spur

Treatments of ankle bone spurs are not symptomatic. The effects of this disease are not reversible. Doctors firstly prescribe some anti inflammatory drugs like "ibuprofen", "naproxen", "aspirin" etc. But, the basic treatment is rest. This will reduce the irritation and pain sensation. This inactive condition can be gained by using some movement limiting wearing like shoe inserts, spur pads etc. Cortisones are injected to limit the spreading of pain as well as inflammation and prescribed only after oral anti inflammatory drugs are failed to perform up to the mark. Muscle relaxants are used in some extent. But, if all these methods are failed to perform, then surgical treatment is compulsory in ankle bone spurs.
