Back Surgery - Types of Spine Surgery

If you have been having problems with your back, what you need is a back surgery. This is rarely an initial treatment of the back pains. There are also other emergencies that always require surgical treatment. Among the many people who visit hospitals, this type of surgery is only considered after a long course of conservative therapy. We all understand that pains related to back always take some time to be resolved. This hence means one should always not rush into this type of surgery. Before considering back surgery, it is advisable that you undergo treatment for more than 6 months.

Spine fusion and spine disc replacement back surgery

Spine fusion back surgery is done to eliminate motion between the adjacent vertebrae. It may be carried out so as to treat some problems such as spondylolisthesis which in simple terms refers to an unstable spine or may be done to extend another surgery like Laminectomy. Spinal disc replacement on the other hand is a new surgery that is still quite uncommon. The good thing about it is that the reason it is carried out is to treat specific types of the back pains. This type of back surgery is carried out while avoiding the problems associated with spine fusion surgery.

Discectomy back surgery

This is a type of back surgery which is responsible for removing a portion of the disc that rests between each vertebra. This procedure is very essential when it comes to solving the problems that are associated with someone’s back. It is important that it is always carried out by a doctor that is qualified since it involves a lot of risks. The most common cause for this type of surgery is the herniated disc. In this type of back surgery, what happens is that the herniated disc is removed so that it can relieve the pressure on the nerves.

Laminectomy back surgery

This type of back surgery is very different as it is a procedure which is used to relieve pressure on the spinal cord. You will find that most of the times, this type of surgery is commonly used when treating conditions such as spinal stenosis and sponylolistthesis. The good with this type of surgery is that it is not hard for it to be carried out. The only thing that is required is a doctor who is qualified and good equipment for carrying it out. This type of back surgery may be done with a spinal fusion to prevent instability.

Foramenotomy back surgery

This type of back surgery is also a procedure which is always used to relieve the pressure on the nerves. The only difference in this is that the nerve is being pinched by more than just herniated disc. There are many people who have undergone this type of surgery with success. One should not be afraid when the doctor suggests it as the end results are always good for them after all. A Foramenotomy is back surgery responsible for the removal of a portion of bone and other tissue that may be compressing the nerve as it exits the spinal column.
